Teachers are free to plan their own lessons, but there are some well-established practices to build on. The following proposals are based on these practices.
In GRADE 1 MATHS, the NUMBERS area deals with numbers up to about 100, with particular attention to the number 0, to place value and to grouping in tens, which introduces the idea of a ten. Pupils work on addition and subtraction, both written and mental, focusing on number bonds to 5 and to 10 as the basis for developing calculation strategies. They count forwards and backwards, also in steps, read and write numbers and use them to show quantities and positions in an order, also on the number line. The relations greater than, less than and equal to are introduced, together with the ideas of before and after. Odd and even numbers are discussed. Activities ask pupils to compare and roughly estimate how many objects a collection contains, without counting them one by one (Approximate Number System).
In the SPACE AND FIGURES area, pupils observe and describe their surroundings, consolidating the words for position in space (above/below, right/left, in front/behind). The main geometric figures are presented as a way to describe the world. Polygons are introduced, and pupils learn to classify them by counting their sides (triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, ...). Lines are first discussed, starting from observation, hands-on work, drawing and body movement. Solid figures are observed and described. The first measuring activities are also proposed, using everyday objects or parts of the body (steps, hand spans) as units.
In the LOGIC area, the quantifiers all, at least one and none and the ideas of true and false are introduced through simple games with two characters: the knight, who always tells the truth, and the knave, who always lies. To support algorithmic thinking, pupils learn to design and carry out simple ordered sequences of instructions.
In the RELATIONS, DATA AND PREDICTIONS area, pupils have their first simple experiences of combinatorics, with different ways of counting and representing. They carry out their first statistical surveys, collecting data from the everyday life of the class. Objects, numbers and figures are classified by explicit properties, discussing the criteria chosen.
The first simple PROBLEMS are tackled, with particular attention to graphic representations and their meaning.
Below you will find maths activities grouped by topic area, though the grouping is not meant to be rigid. The proposed activities are part of the pathways available in the tables of the primary school maths section.
